A sequential ion exchange process on the basis of Kirkendall effect was reported to prepare for metal-semiconductor yolk-shell nanocrystals comprising Au yolks associated with various semiconductor shells. The synthetic procedures involved delicate sulfidation on an Au@Cu2O core-shell nanocrystal template, followed by a kinetically controlled cation exchange reaction enabling the conversion of shell composition into various metal sulfides. Au@Cu7S4, Au@CdS, Au@ZnS and Au@Ni3S4, were synthesized. The analytical results of XPS and PL spectroscopy revealed significant electronic interactions and effective charge carrier separation between the yolk and shell components. This feature has vital implications for utilizing these yolk-shell nanocrystals for photocatalysis applications.
